In Madrid, Greece’s Elena Chatziliadou has become world champion by beating Japan’s Uekusa (+68 kg) in the remake of the 2016 final. Jonathan Horne (+84 kg) of Germany finally became World champion, and France’s Steven Da Costa (-67 kg), at only 21 years old, brilliantly won his 1st but maybe not last title. Poland’s Banaszczyk created the sensation in the -55 kg. Summmary of the 1st day of the Madrid’s finals.

+84kg : Horne finally

Jonathan Horne has just made his dream come true. The 5 times European champion became World champion fort he 1st time at the expense of Iran’s defending world champion, Sajad Ganjzadeh. Led 0-2, Jonathan Horne turned the tide with a 3-2 sweep, to finally win 5-2.

Bronze: Seck (Esp) b. Reis (Por), 6-1

Yamanoglu (Tur) b. Pshenitsyn (Rus), 2-0

-84kg: Kvesic winner without fighting

Croatia’s Ivan Kvesic became world champion in the -84kg category without a fight. His opponent, Ukraine’s Valerii Chobotar was knocked out yesterday during the team competition  and couldn’t compete on satruday.

-75kg: Asgari dominates Busa

Iran’s Bahman Asgari has become the new world champion of -75kg. In the final, in a more tactical than spectacular battle, he beat the 2012 World champion, Italy’s Luigi Busa (1-0).

-67kg: Steven Da Costa, the prince becomes king

In a spectacular final, ending with a score of 6-5, Frenchman Steven Da Costa became world champion by beating Brazil’s Vinicius Figueira. Placing a sweep and a Ura Mawashi geri jodan, Steven Da Costa went looking for this title with the way.

-60kg: Crescenzo makes a miracle

Against Japan’s Sago Naoto, Italy’s Angelo Crescenzo became world champion. Leading the whole fight and close to be disqualified for cumulative penalties, Crescenzo pulled out a controversial Mawashi Geri Jodan and won 4-2.

Ameknassi (Mar) b. Martinez (Fri), 8-0

Kata: hat trick of Kiyuna

In this second kata final between Japan and Spain, Ryo Kiyuna, the two-time world champion won with a powerful and technically minded Anan Daï which outperformed Quintero's Chatanyara Kushanku (5-0).

+68kg: Chatziliadou takes his revenge on Uekusa

After the 2016 final, the battle between Greece’s Chatziliadou and Japan’s Uekusa ended in a 3-0 victory for the Greek. Big favorite, Ayumi Uekusa has just found an opponent at her size.

In a battle that ends at 1-1 between Azerbaijan’s Irina Zaretska and Russia’s Victoria Isaeva, Zaretska scoring first, she became world champion.

-61kg: Prekovic does the show

New world champion in the -61kg category, Serbia’s Jovana Prekovic made the show by dominating 8-5 the former world No.1, China's Yin Xiaoyan. Prekovic inscribed her name in the pantheon of world champion karatekas.

-55kg: Banaszczyk the sensation

The young Polish fighter (21) Dorota Banzsczyk, surprised to be qualified to the final, continued her dream until the end. Banaszcyk won 2-0 in the final against Germany's Jana Bitsch, making her entry into the world's elite of karate.

-50kg: Miho Miyahara, world champion

Japan's Miho Miyahara, who was runner-up in 2016, was crowned world champion after her 3-1 win over Turkey's Serap Ozcelik.

Female Kata: Sanchez dethrones Shimizu at home

The long-awaited duel of these world championships, the women's kata final has kept all its promises. At home, the athletic Sandra Sanchez won 3-2 against Kiyou Shimizu.

The Japanese defending world champion offered a Chatanyara Kushanku more fluid and less powerful than the Spanish champion. The referees prefered the more powerful kata of sanchez.

team kumite: France keeps its title

World champion in 2016, the French team (Leila Heurtault, Lea Avazeri, Andrea Brito and Laura Sivert), won 2-0against Japan. After a 1-1 draw between Leila Heurtault and Natsuki Kawamura, Andrea Brito won her fight 4-0. Lea Avazeri finished the work by dominating Ayumi Uekusa 2-0. France wins its 3rd title in 4 Worlds !
