UPS
Tareg Hamedi, the unlucky Olympic silver medalist in Tokyo (KO of Sajad Ganjzadeh in the final), won his 4th title, his 3rd in a row, with a breathtaking karate. In the final, he dominated Ganjzadeh (6-6).
The return to the top of Iran, absent from international competitions for more than a year, and the comeback of China that was believed to be disappeared from the end of the Olympic Games.
Kazakhstan, with 11 medals (3, 4, 4) finished 1st nation ahead of Japan (3, 3, 2) and Iran (3, 2, 7).
Iranian fighters kept the title won last year by dominating Kazakhstan, 3-0. The Persian warriors are still there !
Nurkanat Azhikanov (-75 kg) wins his 1st major title. In the final, he dominated the former world champion, Bahman Asgari (Iri). The same for his compatriot Kaisar Alpysbay (-60 kg), who made a demonstration in the final (9-1 against Leilei Shi).
If the Japanese Kumite is no longer at the top, Japanese kata is more than ever. 3 in 4 gold medals possible. Only Grace Lau managed to dominate Kiyou Shimizu.
DOWNS
No gold medal for Japan in kumite. Only 2 silver ones in men with Rikito Shimada (-84 kg) and Daiki Ando (+84 kg), and 2 bronze medals among women thanks to Rina Kodo (-55 kg) and Kanna Nagai (-68 kg)
Kata’s double world champion, Phuong Thi Nguyen (Vie), could not do better than 5th.
Sadriddin Saymatov (UZB) four-times medalist, only ranked 5th.
